If you want the OS, you have to buy a Mac in theory. The main problem with that is that people like the OS but not everyone wants to buy a premium case and mobile parts. Also, with the smaller hardware base, there are only legit drivers for those parts that are used in Apple computers. If someone wants to get another piece of hardware working, they would have to write a driver or a wrapper to make their hardware work under OSX.

Depending on what parts are in your non-Apple PC, you will have better or worse luck getting devices to work. Since Windows is designed to run on a large hardware base, there are many more Windows drivers available.

I quit the field about 3 years ago and have been learning audio engineering. I resisted the switch to a mac because I thought they were so much more expensive and then I would have to buy a proTools rig, etc etc. Why spend all that money when I could do it with other software on a PC? Now if you were to do the research and see exactly what was supported for hardware and buy each piece that was for Pc and would work with Mac then you would have a MAC in theroy. Now we also have to understand that Mac is far more stable than windows by far but this is because of there strong back end which is why OSx the X standing for Unix makes it such a solid dependable base system.

Now if you want to see Mac on PC bug the hardware manufactures to make drivers and support Mac until we as a community Stand up and say NO more being told how to do things by certain beurocrats and other communist like people that make us do what they want by limiting our options.

Apple build a machine and make it work with OS X using a few different brands and types of products to keep it simple. OS X and Linux are work for the hardware not the other way around. Safari has so many problems it is not funny. The amount of back-doors you can use to get through it is just incredible. You will also notice that the FireFox version for Macs runs slower then Safari, this is because Apple want you to use their own products. OSx is devolped of Unix and practically steals the GUI of a lot of Linux distros. I own a Macbook, I got it for the light weight, but I wiped all the software off it and put Windows XP on it and Linux redhat and Bluecat. I barely use it and am going to sell it. That has been my experience with Linux distros in the past. So would they really need to support all the hardware out there? The hardware manufacturers that build pc-compliant hardware would have to start building either hybrid or Mac compliant hardware. This is doable, but will be a rather expensive task.
