One major shake-up after another has thinned the field considerably for Round 3 of the U. Open at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin, on Saturday. Of those left, the big names include Jordan Spieth and Martin Kaymer , both previous winners.

Yet although he's got a lot of ground to make up, Kaymer has shown signs he can claw back the difference over the final two rounds. The German has hit nine birdies during the first two rounds. However, Kaymer needs to avoid the mistakes that saw him slip to three bogeys over the front nine in Round 1.

Only 2 holes on the back nine are playing under par at Erin Hills. Fortunately for Kaymer, he has been pretty efficient on the back nine through two rounds.

He's collected four birdies and been guilty of just two bogeys. A faster start from Kaymer on the front nine in Rounds 3 and 4 will see the German make up the difference on those at the top.

The mass exodus of marquee names has left the door ajar for one of the more underrated players to get his first win at a major. Rickie Fowler is well positioned to win in Wisconsin thanks to being just one shot behind the leaders ahead of the third round.

It means the year-old California native is now primed to deliver his best golf in the clutch. His form so far at the tournament indicates the leaders should be worried.

Fowler " charged out in front with a bogey-free 65 that doubled as one of the most impressive first rounds in tournament history," according to Kyle Porter of CBS Sports. As long as Fowler avoids the gaffes he experienced on the back nine in the second round, he should forge a lead ahead of the final day.

Fowler and Kaymer will be the two most notable players who make their move for the lead over the next two days.
