Coles is crying "fowl" over strict Anzac Day trading hours, claiming that arch-rival Woolworths broke the law by putting staff into stores before opening time to cook the chooks and put buns in the ovens. In NSW, Anzac Day is classified as a restricted trading day, with large retailers including Coles, Aldi and Woolworths not permitted to open before 1pm.

However, Woolworths defended its activities, saying that the store preparation was carried out by volunteer salaried managers — not team members employed under enterprise agreements — in line with regulations. Woolworths' explanation didn't wash with Coles, which questioned whether "volunteer" managers had the necessary expertise to make fresh sushi, slice the salami and fire up the ovens. Coles staff reported that Woolworths stores in suburban Sydney, Katoomba, Richmond and Parkes were taking deliveries from 9am. In previous years, NSW's minister for industrial relations would issue a media release requesting that inspectors use "common sense" and allow businesses to prepare for trade before 1pm.

Retailers said the NSW government, after relaxing Boxing Day trading hours late last year, had cracked down on Anzac Day trading hours this year and was enforcing the 1pm opening time.
